Hockey practice.....?

I'm from New York, and I'm about to start learning hockey skills. I have some sticks and skates, but I'm having a lot of trouble finding a rink that holds open shooting sessions. It's almost as if they are all tailored toward skaters and hockey teams... Does anyone have any useful information perhaps?
